CASE STUDY | Aranet4 helps theaters stay open through the pandemic

Indoor public venues, such as theaters, cinemas, or concert halls are often poorly ventilated and are therefore considered high-risk places for getting COVID-19. When someone who is infected with the virus coughs or sneezes releasing infected aerosols into the air, everyone in the auditorium is at risk.

Recently a theater in China –  a country where clean, ventilated air in theaters is sold as an extra – had to track 70,000 people when four visitors tested positive after a performance. This goes to show how contagious the virus is and how quickly it can spread in poorly ventilated rooms.

According to scientists Jose-Luis Jimenez and Zhe Peng, ”in any given indoor environment, when excess CO₂ levels double, the risk of [COVID-19] transmission also roughly doubles”. Therefore, ensuring effective ventilation in theaters is a way to reduce the risk of infection, make theaters safe for visitors, and allow them to keep their doors open throughout the pandemic.

CO₂ monitoring is the first step to improving air quality and minimizing COVID-19 spread in theaters. That is exactly what Valmiera Drama Theater did. With the help of six Aranet4 PRO sensors, the theater’s technical director Janis Kreklis monitored air quality in auditoriums for a month. The data from the sensors surprised him:

”Even with the auditorium half empty and our ventilation system turned on at full capacity, CO₂ levels quickly exceeded the recommended 1000ppm. That was shocking,” Janis Kreklis admits.
